Is San José worth a visit?

Most travellers spend only a night in San José on arrival or departure, but a day is enough for its best sights: the Teatro Nacional, the gold and jade museums, the Mercado Central, and dinner in Barrio Escalante. The real draws of the Central Valley are just outside the city: two active volcanoes, waterfalls and coffee farms, all reachable on half-day trips.

Day trips from San José

  • Poás Volcano (1 h 15 min): a huge active crater with a turquoise acid lake. Entry is by timed ticket bought in advance on the SINAC website, and visits are limited to about 20 minutes. Go early before clouds roll in.
  • La Paz Waterfall Gardens (1 h 30 min): a private park with five waterfalls, often combined with Poás.
  • Coffee tours: Doka Estate near Alajuela or farms in Heredia show how coffee is grown, processed and roasted.
  • Irazú and the Orosi Valley (1 h 30 min): the highest volcano, then lunch in the coffee valley and the ruins in Ujarrás.
  • White-water rafting on the Pacuare river, one of the world's great rafting rivers, from Turrialba.

Poás tours from San José include transport and the timed entry ticket. Combine with La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
