The resplendent quetzal is easiest to see from about February to May, when it feeds on wild avocados. Visit with a naturalist guide: they carry spotting scopes and know where the birds are feeding.

A guided morning walk in a cloud forest reserve is the best activity in Monteverde.

Hanging bridges and zip-lines

Monteverde is where canopy zip-lining began. Selvatura, Sky Adventures and 100% Aventura all offer long cables above the forest, and the first two also have walkways of hanging bridges for a slower look at the canopy. A night tour is also a highlight: sloths, tarantulas, tree frogs and kinkajous come out after dark.

Night walks last about two hours and start around 5:30 pm. Bring a torch and closed shoes.

Getting to Monteverde

Monteverde is about 3.5 hours from San José. The final stretch from the Inter-American Highway via Guacimal is now paved; other approaches are rough gravel. From Arenal, drive around Lake Arenal (3.5–4 hours) or take the jeep-boat-jeep (about 3 hours). Pack a fleece and rain jacket: it is cool, windy and often drizzly.

Stay at least two nights: early-morning guided walks and night tours are the highlights.

Frequently asked questions

Is Monteverde worth visiting?

Yes. The cloud forest is unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica, with exceptional birdlife, hanging bridges and zip-lines, and cooler mountain air.

Do you need a 4x4 to get to Monteverde?

Not via the main route from the Inter-American Highway, which is now paved. A 4x4 helps on the other access roads and some hotel driveways, especially in the rainy season.

When can you see quetzals in Monteverde?

Quetzals live in Monteverde year-round, but they are easiest to see from about February to May during nesting and wild-avocado season.
